As editor of MonthRAG, I have decided to lay the webazine to rest for some time while I concentrate on university work. I will also be working on the new range of Thrilly clothing, which I hope will be launched very soon.

Sometimes it becomes some what of a mission to keep things going with MonthRAG, especially as it is, on-the-whole, a one-man show. However, this is not the end of MonthRAG.

All the past 13 (and some) issues will still be kept online for readers to check out completely free. The Archive is a particularly helpful feature as it allows readers to select their preferable type of content from the past 2 years.

Speaking of 2 years, MonthRAG is 2 years-old this month! Happy birthday to us.

So that's that for now. Stick around and hopefully sooner than later MonthRAG will be hitting your computer screens harder than ever. And watch out for Thrilly.

The British Snowboard & Freeski Tour gets set to head indoors and make its fourth stop of the series at Castleford SNO!zone on Saturday 6th October for the Animal British Indoor Slopestyle Championships. Stopping off at two local schools along the way on the 4th & 5th October, the tour looks to inspire even more newcomers, give away 100 FREE lessons, offer FREE product testing and freestyle coaching, plus display some of the UK’s finest snowboarding and freeskiing.

The Animal British Indoor Slopestyle Championships will showcase some of the UK’s most progressive freestyle riding as over 150 of the UK’s best riders including, freeskiers, Paddy Graham, Andy Bennett and 2007 Animal Artificial Slopestyle Champion Jamie Nicholls, put together an assortment of technical rail lines.

This Autumn / Winter season sees the introduction of a new capsule menswear line called ATiKiN. A limited availability collection from the team behind Nikita Clothing in Iceland, the range rolls out in select stores for the first ever time this month.

ATiKiN reaches out to those that have outgrown their basic day to day wear and want to try an alternative label to dress up their denims. Consisting of a carefully turned out selection of tops, pants, tees and jackets, ATiKiN is all about the need for something new.

The range has been designed and developed with action in mind, a sense of style and a love of music. Set apart from the multitude of men’s streetwear on the market, it is an independent label setting its own trend.

Nike 6.0 Killing It comps

What is it?

The Nike 6.0 Killing It comp is designed to reward riders who open up new lines or lay down crazy tricks, people who lay down the law and realize what’s possible in their own action sport.

It begins when the first rider drops in during practice and ends whenever the judges want to call it a day.

Comp judges choose the rider who’s been riding the hardest, pushing their own limits the most or someone who just shows absolute dedication to what they’re doing.

Nike 6.0 have introduced the Killing It comps because we feel that the dedication of unsung heroes needs to be recognized. The winner of the Nike 6.0 Killing It comp will have laid it down and put everything on the line, whether it’s for nailing one incredible trick or for surpassing their own expectations, regardless of their overall standing.

Think of this as the ‘Man of the match’ for your comp. He might not have podiumed for the proper comp, but he’s the name on everyone’s lips on their way home…the one who killed it.

Who are the judges?

It’s your comp and it’s totally up to you. It could be the comp judges or the crowd, or that dude sitting in the corner that’s always there but no one knows his name.

When is it judged?

The judges need to be keeping an eye out for those that are Killing It throughout the event. The person who walks away with the Killing It title gets announced at the end of the day.

What prizes up for grabs?

Fill your boots! The winner of the Killing It comp will be walking away with…

…a cash prize
(taken out of the sponsorship fee)

…a Killing It manuscript of destruction (yes, it’s a certificate)
(entitles the winner to a pair of Nike 6.0 shoes, a t-shirt & a limited edition 6.0 mutant and fresh Nike 6.0 shumtter)

Trespass British Snowboardcross Championships review and results

The Trespass Snowboardcross Championships were welcomed in with true Norfolk agricultural style by local rider and MC, James Thorne, sporting a flat cap, waistcoat and wellies. During the competition each rider received a timed run before going head to head into the eliminating rounds with the hopes of making it through to the final. After a great start Samantha Rogers set the pace in the women’s final, with 2006 Artificial Snowboardcross Champion Vickie Pullin hot on her heels. Taking advantage of her lead Samantha crossed finish line first to take the 2007 women’s title, with Vickie and Becca Richardson in a very close second and third. The men’s final was one of the closest races of the day, with Harry Kingsley-Jones, Jamie Keeble and Jack Albrow pushing Nathan Onions out after the third turn to make it tight race for 1st 2nd and 3rd. Harry opted to gap the rollers and scraped his way over the line in first to take the title, with Jamie Keeble and Jack Albrow following in second and third respectively.

The younger competitors stepped it up during the afternoon’s Big Air Jam, spinning switch 540’s and 720’s ensuring them spots through to the eight man final. Jamie Keeble and Tom Percival were throwing down big frontside rodeo 720’s and corked backside 720’s to take second and third, but it was 13 year old Sparrow Knox who landed a 900 and switch backside 540 who took the title. In the women’s Big Jam Samantha Rogers upped the ante by pulling out a big frontside 540 to add another win to her already impressive collection.

The schools tour team continued their quest to introduce and inspire new comers to skiing and snowboarding prior to the weekend by visiting two Norwich schools and over 600 pupils on the 20th and 21st September. Coming away from his free snowboard lesson, one young lad was heard saying to his dad; “its not that I want to come back… I am coming back!” Good work.

The Quiksilver British Artificial Big Air Championships

We’re all going on a summer holiday… The British Snow Tour bus will be making its third stop of the series at Warmwell Holiday Park on the weekend of 29th & 30th September, for the Quiksilver British Snowboard/Freeski Big Air Championships and Quarterpipe Jam. Prior to the weekend’s competition, the British Snow Tour Schools Team will be heading into two Dorset schools on the 27th and 28th September to inspire over 1,000 school pupils to get active and offer them the great gift of a FREE ski/snowboard lesson at Dorset Snowsports Centre whilst the Championship event is in action.

Over the weekend, Dorset Snowsports Centre will witness approximately 150 of the UK’s snowboard and ski elite showcasing impressive tricks over the huge 8m jump for the Quiksilver British Artificial Big Air Championships. With 2007 British Snowboard Big Air Champion, Si Brass, hanging up his boots for the day to fulfil his event duties as start referee, the Artificial title is for the taking and those ready to snap it up, include big hitters Jamie Nicholls and Ben Knox. On the female side, hot favourites to take the title on home turf include 2007 British Snowboard Big Air and Snowboardcross Champion Jo Chastney and freeskier Teri Spencer, who placed 2nd in the 2006 British Big Air Championships and 5th in the 2007 British Slopestyle Championships.

In the morning’s Quarterpipe Jam, riders will show off their skills, inspired by the chance of winning one of the four prestigious spots to compete in the Invitational British Quarterpipe Championships at the Metro show, Friday 26th October. UK talent will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of thousands of spectators and compete alongside super stars, Dom Harrington, and Paddy Graham, to name just a few!

New to the British Snow Tour, Nike 6.0 will be running a ‘Killing It’ competition, where an exclusive ‘money can’t buy’ prize will be up for grabs. This will be awarded to the snowboarder who pulls off the biggest and most impressive tricks throughout the day. During the championships, Salomon and Faction Ski’s will also be dishing out new set-ups in the “Salomon Best Un-sponsored” and Faction Ski’s “Step Up” awards.

"One of the most popular questions we get from all you girls out there is how you could possibly become either a part of Team Nikita or somehow get into our photoshoot. As you probably know, the Nikita team girls are either top snowboarders, surfers, skaters, or girls who live the lifestyle to the fullest, dedicating themselves to travel and snowboard or surf the mountains and the waves of this world, organizing or taking part in events with and for girls who ride. Twice a year we then meet up somewhere in the world for several days to shoot photos of the Nikita girls wearing the newest designs, and the photos we use to show the world what Nikita is all about. Animal Slopestyle Championships review and results

The sun was shining and so was the local talent at the Animal British Snowboard Slopestyle Championships in Chatham on Saturday, with local riders, Cody Hierons and Callum Wilkin setting the high standard for the day. The Big Air Jam kick started the day’s competition and after throwing down a huge switch underfilp 720, Jamie Nicholls was crowned the men’s champ. Setting a new tour record for the youngest female winner EVER!, 10 year old Katie Ormerod nailed a big backside 360 off the big kicker to take the women’s title.

The sun continued to shine as the afternoon’s Animal British Slopestyle Championships got underway with the top nine male and top four female riders making it through to the two run final. In the women’s final, Samantha Rogers linked together a smooth and faultless run to take home first place and the women’s Animal British Slopestyle title. Her choice of tricks included a boardslide to frontside 360 over the big kicker, to frontside 180 and a noseslide over the bottom rainbow rail. Taking second place, Katie Omerod secured her spot as the “one to watch” with a big method and backside 360, with Vickie Pullin taking home third after a frontside 180 off of the big kicker. In the men’s final Jamie Nicholls stomped a technical run which included, a backside 720 stailfish – tagged the biggest jump of the day - followed by a floaty backside 180 and a switch boardslide, to 50-50 to frontside boardslide to fakie out over the 60ft battleship box rail, securing him the title. Local Chatham boys Cody Hierons and Callum Wilkin, rode well all day and so it was no surprise that they both took podium spots. Cody won second place after pulling off a backside 540 double grab, and text book switch boardslide to frontside to boardslide over the battleship box with Callum taking third after a fluid technical run.

Thrills and chills at Snow Park NZ

It’s back to basics for competitors entered in the Freestyle for Funds event this Sunday 23 September at Snow Park NZ as they ski or board in bikinis to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

A day for the girls, the Snow Girls Jam includes a Slopestyle competition on novice and intermediate features as well as the Bikini downhill on the ski racers track for which a bikini must be worn on some part of their body, and can be over clothing.

Five dollars for each lift pass purchased (discounted at $20) for the event will go to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, the event is an opportunity for the girls to shine in the terrain park and raise awareness for the charity. Males are welcome to enter providing a bra or bikini is worn.

Other action on Snow Park’s finale weekend starts on Saturday (22 September) with the Volcom Peanut Butter Rail Jam. The snowboarding event is free to enter, on a first come first serve basis, and boasts tons of prizes. A selection of rails will be set out to challenge the competitors. The event will be run in a Jam style format.

Everyone who enters will be rewarded for their efforts. There are two divisions: 15 and under, and 16 and over, Open and Female. Fuelling the competitors throughout the day will be a bountiful supply of peanut butter and jam sandwiches as well as a free BBQ on the deck of the Woolshed Bar and Restaurant.

Registration for the Volcom Peanut Butter Rail Jam is from 8.30am in the Woolshed. The action gets underway at 10.30 and the finals set to be staged at 2pm. Discounted lift passes will be available for all competitors.

For the Snow Girls Jam, registration is from 9am at the Retail Shop with the event getting underway at 11am.

Further Spring specials include 2-for-1 Tuesdays, buy a full day pass any Tuesday and receive another day pass for free. The V-can Sunday special requires visitors to bring an empty V drink can to the ticket office to get an adult day pass for just $25, under 18 for $15.

Thursday 25th October 2007 sees the eagerly anticipated premier of the new Hungerpain snowboarding movie released for Winter 2007. The third offering from this legendary snow crew, ‘Otium’ stars Tom West, Nelson Pratt, James Thorne, Mark Ruparelia and Dom Harington, to name a few. Edited by the hugely talented Pete Ellis, this movie takes in several stunning locations including Austria, France, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the UK.

Otium is new, fresh and innovative, the film features cutting edge editing never seen before, an invisible snowboards section and some of the hottest riding from the UK’s finest talent.

Premiering at the Coronet Cinema on Notting Hill Gate from 8.30pm on 25th October. The Hungerpain team will be in full attendance to introduce the movie.

For all those that can’t make it to the premier however, the DVD will be available as a cover mount on the November edition of White Lines magazine.

Chatham this weekend... then on to Norfolk!

The British Snowboard and Freeski Tour set off from Soul Sports HQ last night on route for Chatham for the Animal Slopestyle Championships this weekend. Once that's over with, it'll be on to Norfolk to continue the tour with the Trespass Snowboard / Skiercross Championships on 22 & 23 September.

Norfolk Ski Club, which is a new venue on the 2007 British Snow Tour, will see some high-speed action when over 100 of the UK’s top snowboarders and freeskiers don helmets and sharpen their edges for the Trespass Snowboard and Skiercross Championships. Competitors will race in heats of four down a challenging course that includes bumps, jumps and tight banked turns, pushing reactions and control to the max. Pete Ellis now riding for Blueskin clothing

He joins Jo Chastney, Zach Culshaw and Emma Rogers on the team, the 22 year old from Solihull has been riding for around 6 years and came on board this Summer. ‘Its great to have him onboard’ says Niki. Back from Bestival to enjoy the latest issue

Hello.. 'tis your editor here. I'm back from the Isle of Wight now, after having a blast at the Bestival festival. I can say for sure, it definitely was the best!

Obviously, after being a huge Beastie Boys fan for many years, the headlining band on the Saturday night was the highlight on a personal level. They even played an awesome instrumental set on Sunday afternoon. Other MonthRAG highlights were the sublime set by Annie Mac in the Bollywood tent, and also the 65-year-old reggae maestro DJ Derek.

The weather kept within the festival spirit, with the sun blazing all weekend. Though one of the nicest things about Bestival was the friendly atmosphere. Most festivals seem to hold a good spirit amongst the crowds, but Bestival just seemed to have something even better about it.

There'll be a Bestival review in MonthRAG Issue 14 next month, including lots of photos. Now's the time to check out the latest issue at monthrag.com with fine material from Posy Dixon, Nollie.tv, Souls of Mischief and of course ourselves at the webazine itself.

Horgmo dominates Stylewars 2007

Falls Creek, Australia, hosted the last major event on the Southern Hemisphere leg of the 07/08 TTR World Snowboard Tour as the TTR THREE(3) STAR Stylewars 007 by Oakley rolled into town. The first TTR Event ever to be held South of the Equator in 2005, the Stylewars was cancelled last season due to poor snow conditions. What a difference a season makes, as the best snow fall in 20 years created perfect condition. A gruelling event that saw two judged sessions a day culminating in the final placings, Stylewars 007 by Oakley created the biggest Hip seen in Australia and the biggest kicker judged in a snowboarding contest. At a stomach curning 36 m flat (140ft), it was the storming Norwegian, Torstein Horgmo who opened up the session and dominated proceedings.

Clear skies, but strong winds hit the first day of judging at the Stylewars 007 by Oakley, seeing the morning session concentrate on the three-feature Slopestyle line, a solid but definitely the smallest of features put on at season’s contest. Horgmo(NOR), Caldwell(USA), Zeestraten(NZE), Koia(NZE) and Tiene(AUS) put on the pick of the action, as the Australian and New Zealand rivalry heated up with the ‘Bledisnow’ Cup, a side event pitting the five best Aussies against the five best Kiwis over the course of the event. While judges were not counting ‘Big Bertha’, the main feature and most imposing feature on the course, Quentin Robbins(NZE) checked it out, stomping a huge b/s 360 before being caught by the knuckle on a cab 5 attempt that closed the kicker for the remainder of the day and put him out of the event with a bruised foot.

Second session brought the hip into play, creating a charge of solid airs and tech spins. Jakko Ruha(FIN), Wyatt Caldwell(USA), Robbie Walker(AUS) and Toni-Markus Turunen(FIN) and Jake Koia(NZE) who lead the charge, pulling in major points for the session.

Day two followed the first, wind still an issue for ‘Big Burtha’, but heavy snowboarding split into morning and afternoon sessions on the Slopestyle then Hip features. In what must be considered a marathon event, it was Jake Koia(NZE) leading the pack at the end of the day, but the Aussies leading the Bledisnow Cup.

Day three, and wind had died down sufficiently to see Torstein Horgmo(NOR) start a session on ‘Big Burtha’ that could only be compared to the legendary Hemsedal photo shoots. Anticipation burnt as Horgmo dropped in and stomped a b/s 3, the largest seen in a judged contest session. At 36 m (140 ft) from take off transition to landing, it was something else again. Horgmo opened a session that saw Jake Kioa(NZE), Stef Zeestraten(NZE), Robbie Walker(AUS) and a handful of others put down one of the most remarkable sessions seen at a contest. But it was Horgmo who started it and finished it stomping a f/s 10, switch b/s 9 and a 540 stalefish to walk away with the best trick, Grandmaster Title and the 550 TTR Ranking points from the Stylewars 007 by Oakley event. Horgmo’s Title moves him into TTR World #3 with Wyatt Caldwell(USA) moving to TTR World #6 and Stef Zeestraten(NZE) moving into the TTR Top 10.

An amazing THREE(3) STAR event and the perfect way to finish up the major events on the TTR World Snowboard Tour Southern Hemisphere leg. The last event in the Southern Hemisphere for the 07/08 season will be the TTR ONE(1) STAR Australian Junior Series event in Perisher Blue this weekend before the Tour heads back to the Northern Hemisphere where the TTR Tour culminates in March at the last TTR SIX(6) STAR event, the Burton US Open of Snowboarding at Stratton, Vermont.

The new British Snowboard Tour fires up its freestyle bus, and gets ready to make its first stop of the tour at Chatham on Saturday the 15th September for the highly anticipated Animal British Slopestyle Championships. Stopping off at two Chatham Schools along the way on the 13th & 14th September, the tour is set to inspire over 1,000 newcomers, give away 200 FREE lessons, offer FREE snowboard coaching and product testing, plus showcase some of the most progressive freestyle riding the UK has to offer.

The Animal British Slopestyle Championships will witness some of the UK’s most progressive rail and kicker combo’s as over 100 of the UK’s best riders including, Sam Cullum and Jamie Nicholls, throw down tricks on Chatham’s selection of freestyle toys, including: a 42ft rollercoaster rail, wall ride, a variety of kickers and a huge 60ft battleship box. A relaxed big air jam kick starts each day’s competition whilst Tony B’s tunes and James Thorne’s heckling on the mic will be sure to keep everyone entertained! It’s been a while, but the crew at FoTP have finally got it back together and the Photo Competition officially starts again on the 1st of September 2007 – so come along, join in and upload those shots!

After our first competition being such a great success - we had hundreds of entries over the year and over 1200 votes for the final - we thought it would be sensible to hold another one, but this time we have changed the rules, so that more of you will get the chance to win some of the goodies on offer.

The competition is judged on a monthly basis, and each monthly winner will then be placed in the showcase on the home page, and automatically entered into the grand finale!

However, in last year’s competition, only shots from the UK scene were legible to win.

This year, we’ve changed the scenario, and uploaded photographs from anywhere in the world are legible to win - but it has to be you, showing off your freestyle skill with either a set of skis, a snowboard or a camera.

So we want to see your freestyle shots from around the globe – it cold be a shot of you tweaking out that first Smith grind, or a picture of Shaun White you snapped at the European Open – if it’s freestyle, then upload it!

Full details and rules for this 2007/08 competition are available on the site. A comprehensive guide showing you how to upload your shots amongst other things will also be available very shortly – so get to the gallery and upload those snaps.

Les Diablerets, Switzerland will be host to the Freestyle Concept Autumn Camp 2007, from 27 October - 10 November.

On Saturday 3 November, the 'Battle on the Glacier 3000' snowboard comp presented alongside FBBB will be going down (supported by MonthRAG). 1000CHF of prize money - per men and women riders - is up for grabs. There will be a BBQ, a skate demo by the Antiz Skateboard crew and an after-party with DJ Unique from Zurich at the chalet.

Special guests at the camp will include the Knox Clan, Lucy Passmore, Sam Cullum, Morgan Le Faucheur, riders from Absinthe Films, the Advita crew, Robin Reymond (Lil Robin), plus some of the RIde UK team riders.

Chamberlain ditches DC

Canadian pro snowboarer Simon Chamberlain has returned to his original boot sponsor of ThirtyTwo after dropping his ties with DC. He'll also be hooked up with 32's shoe company etnies.

Simon first made his international presence felt when featured in 2003's Nixon Jib Fest. Probably his most notable moment came in the 2005 video production of the DC Mountain Lab, cementing his title as a DC team member.

However, the "Canadian young buck" - who also rides for his own companies Stepchild Snowboards and Nomis clothing - has now got back to his roots to again ride for ThirtyTwo.

“I am stoked to have Simon back on the team because he is always so positive and motivated,” said Eddie Lee, etnies/ThirtyTwo team manager. “The first day that Simon joined the team last week we met at the Los Angeles International Airport and headed out to New Zealand to ride with Wille Yli-Louma and Markku Koski. While we were there he was amped to ride everything from rails, to quarter pipes and backcountry cliff drops regardless of the conditions.”

Any Means World Premiere - Londonderry Pop Festival

If you have any means of getting to southern Vermont on Saturday, August 25th, get your friends together and head to the backside of Magic Mountain in Londonderry for the world premiere of "Any Means". Plan to stay the night and celebrate the Summer of Shred.

The Rome SDS is throwing a little party called the Londonderry Pop Festival to celebrate the premiere of their first feature-length movie, Any Means—at a closed ski area called Timber Ridge. Once the night falls on the 25th, the movie will play and Bjorn, Jesse, Jonaven, LNP and the rest of the Rome team will light up the backcountry, the Tahoe Flophouse, Quebec handrails and the Vermont countryside on a large, outdoor movie screen.

The movie is definitely the main event, but the Londonderry Pop Festival is much more than a showing of progressive, fun riding on the big screen. There will be summertime snowboarding. There will be multiple live bands. There will be skating. There will be a large fire. There will be free stuff flying through the air. There will be camping out with the Rome team and other shreds.

During the afternoon before the movie shows, riders on the East Coast will have their first chance to shred for the season at the I "Heart" Box session—kicking off at 4 pm. Like all I "Heart" Box sessions, there will be a jam format on a few jib features and the winner will walk with a new Hustlin Artifact.

Some of Rome's partners will be on hand. Waterville Valley is trucking over their mini-ramp from New Hampshire for the event. Skating will go down whenever someone wants to drop in. Snowboarder Magazine, a sponsor of Any Means, will be grilling up hot dogs, burgers and other choice cuts of animal flesh.

Admission is free, but you'll need a ticket to get in. Free downloadable tickets are available here. Just download and print it.

So fill the car with the crew. Pack up the tent, sleeping bags, snowboard gear and skates. And head down Route 11 in Vermont to the Londonderry Pop Festival to see Any Means and have fun with a bunch of snowboarders.

For a day (and night) of film, shred, skate, and music.

STANDINGsideways Invitational 2 with SNO!zone & TSA

The events and tricks from the second STANDINGsideways Invitational have now been performed and recorded to digital memory, joining the first event in becoming a fond recollection on the minds of those present at SNO!zone Castleford on Saturday 4th August.

The second after hours session, conceived to push the level of UK park riding, saw a team of UK pros push their game and hit an 18ft long up-box, angled to end at a height of 12ft and send them over a gap of 16ft to the landing. Another first for any UK slope!

Damian Doyle, the man behind the STANDINGsideways Invitationals, spoke about the feature. “The idea had been talked about at the previous session. We had a 24ft gap to box that worked out so well and we were stood looking at it thinking it’d be perfect to hit the other way round. The opportunity came up so we decided to make it happen.”

A finely sculpted gap kicker had been built by the CASvegas SNO!park crew and drawn plans could be made reality. After consultation with the riders, adjustments to the angle of the up-box, and a few tweaks with the piste basher, the feature was complete and left for the box to set in place, teasing everyone with it’s dominant presence.

Riders in attendance for the session were UK pros Colum Mytton, Charlie Clark, Jonny Russell, Si Foster, Monkey Stu Horsham and Rick Barrow, who declared himself test pilot and stomped the first 5050 to backside shifty off, beginning an intense session that lasted into the early hours of the morning.

Rome’s Rick, voted ‘rider of the night’ by fellow snowboarders, was amped after putting down a variety of tricks and stepping up to some switch action [wait for the film for specifics!]. “I hadn’t rode for ages so was stoked to get the call from Damo saying the session was on. I had some tricks set in mind and was just happy to get everything I’d thought about on the drive over. It was just good to be with everyone and get motivated seeing all the other riders killing it.”

Like a piece of Banksy artwork, the set-up that was lovingly created on a secret mission has now been destroyed. Full images won’t be revealed until the release of the new TSA film in October 2007. A definitive UK movie from STANDINGsideways, showing the world that the UK dryslope and indoor scenes have most hardcore scenes anywhere.

BBC to host stage at Bestival

Bestival are over the moon to announce that The BBC is to host a stage this year, featuring some of the best new acts on the planet and live DJ sets from Radio 1’s star collective.

The BBC Introducing… tent will host an awe-inspiring selection of up-and-coming artists – including Jack Peñate, Foals, Architecture In Helsinki and I Like Trains – at the award-winning festival of fun on the Isle of Wight in September.

In addition to the bands, the likes of Zane Lowe, Huw Stephens and Annie Mac will be hosting and DJing at the stage over the weekend, it was announced on BBC Radio 1 last night.

The 1000-capacity venue picks up where the ‘Rock n Roll Tent’ left off last year, as the prime destination for great new music championed by festival curator and Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank and located in the centre of the festival site.

Highlights of the performances will also be available to listen to on new music shows across BBC Radio and to watch online after the festival.

The announcement follows the success of the BBC Introducing… stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival and is part of the BBC’s continuing commitment to supporting new music.

Rob Da Bank, Bestival curator, said; “I'm really pleased the BBC Introducing… stage is coming to Bestival! It's a really great platform for up and coming acts and totally reflects mine and Bestival's love of new and underground music that might well pop up in the charts in a few months.”

The British Snowboard and Freeski Tour organisers are stoked once again, to be working with three of the industry’s rock steady brands, Animal, Quiksilver and Trespass, to roll out the upcoming UK tour. With the three brands each stepping up to secure their own event discipline, new tour features including jam sessions and freestyle coaching, coupled with product testing and 1,000 free beginner lessons up for grabs, take five from Facebook and get involved on www.britishsnowtour.com, as the new website is live & kicking now…

Free Product Testing – Get the chance to try out next seasons ski kit from K2 and Faction Skis and snowboard kit from Salomon, K2 and Ride, with testing running alongside the freestyle coaching sessions. During the championships, Salomon and Faction Ski’s will also be dishing out new set-ups in the “Salomon Best Un-sponsored” and Faction Ski’s “Step Up” awards.

New Expression sessions – Relaxed jam and expression sessions will run in conjunction with each championship event, giving you more slope time and the chance to get your hands on more great prizes.
The Schools Tour Team – Headed up by Animal pro rider, Sonia Shaw (the brains), James Thorne (the mouth) and Paddy Graham (the tramp…olinist), and joined along the way by local pro-riders, including Ride’s Chris Chatt, the team will be stopping at two schools in each area prior to every championship event. Friend requests are predicted to go through the roof, particularly as Animal, Quiksilver and Trespass will be offering over 1,000 free ski and snowboard lessons at the championship learner academies.

The now regular SNO!Academy Rookie park (for those in Academy lessons) will be on the lesson slope on Thursday with dedicated coaches for all levels. Defending 06/07 TTR Tour Champion, Torah Bright(AUS), kicked off her title defence with a 4th and 1st in the Burton New Zealand Open Slopestyle and Halfpipe contests, has moved into 07/08 TTR World #4 and within striking distance of Clark. Other serious contenders for prize money and valuable TTR points include Jenny Jones(GBR), Hana Beaman(USA), Ellery Hollingsworth(USA), Sina Candrian(SUI) and Manuela Pesko(SUI).

Final day of the Burton NZ Open

The Burton Global Open Series announces Mitch Brown (NZE) and Torah Bright (AUS) as men’s and women’s halfpipe champions in the fifth annual Burton NZ Open at Snow Park NZ today.

Brown is the first New Zealander to take out the prestigious halfpipe title in the history of the competition. He was the highest scoring rider in the semi-finals when his combination of tricks, from top to bottom, the most technical run of the semis. Going into the finals, his first run was not up to his previous standard putting him in seventh place. In his second run, the weather set in with wind and poor visibility but when others were giving up, he kept going, moving up into third. Saving the best until last it was his final run that put him into first place. Featuring a frontside 900, followed by backside 540, frontside 1080, Haakon flip, frontside air backside 900 to an Allyoop inverted 540, the run scored him 93.25, putting him clearly ahead of second place winner, Scotty Lago (USA) with 88.0.

Lago had the highest amplitude of the day, getting monster height out of the pipe but his run was not as technical as Brown’s although he did take out best men’s trick. Ryo Aono (JPN), current leader on the FIS World Cup halfpipe circuit took out third with another huge and technical run.

“Mitch was on fire, right from training in the morning,” said Ste’en Webster, assistant head judge. “His qualifying runs were a bit of an eye-opener for the rest of the field. It’s great to see Kiwi success at this competition.”

Torah Bright was in top form to take not only the women’s halfpipe title but also best trick with a switch backside 540 which was the last hit of her winning run. The run featured a backside five, air to fakie, cab720, frontside 540, backside 360 finishing with the switch backside 540. The entire run was extremely well executed with every hit featuring a grab.

Last year’s winner, Kelly Clark, got second despite getting the highest amplitude in the girls’ field but Bright’s technical aspect stepped above Clark’s amplitude. Manuela Pesko (SUI) took out third with a good spin combination of three’s, five’s and sevens and is the current leader of the FIS Halfpipe World Cup Tour.

Event organiser, Reuben Yeoman said the event showed New Zealand snowboarding was now a definite force to be reckoned with on the world stage.

“This year’s open was a huge success, especially considering the weather conditions thrown at us,” he said. “One thing that really came through is New Zealand riders are matching it on a world level. It’s not just the big names such as Mitch Brown and Juliane Bray but there’s a real depth of talent that showed itself during the Burton Open.”

Burton NZ Open pipe event postponed until Sunday

The Burton Global Open Series announces the halfpipe semi-finals and finals of the Burton NZ Open, due to take place today, have been postponed until tomorrow (Sunday August 12) due to poor weather.

The event will start at 9.30am with the women’s halfpipe semi-finals, followed by the men’s semi-finals at 11.15am and men’s and women’s finals at 1.30pm. The Invitation Quarterpipe Jam will then follow at 4.00pm.

After the first FBBB in June 2006, the For Boarders by Boarders crew is finally heading for Tamworth - the UK’s original SnowDome!

A sweet FBBB park for the riders, some wicked beats courtesy of DJ Ch!co and the infamous MC Jaye (some of you may remember the big hair at the Redbull Rail Storm in London) is a recipe for a full on night of music and shred. Our partners in snow – ‘Fear of the Park’ and the ‘Knox Clan’ will be present on the night to capture the finest moments on film and with plenty of give aways for those bustin’ out some moves. Jail clothing will also have a stand up in the bar area, offering some great apparel for those of you that like to look good! This will be a night of non stop fun and we look forward to seeing you all!

Day three of the Burton NZ Open

Thirty foot big airs weren’t the only massive spectacles going on at Snow Park NZ today during the Burton NZ Open Slopestyle semi-finals. High winds, gusting so strong they blew away the windometer, saw the cancellation of the Slopestyle finals.

Final placings were decided from the two semi-final runs with Mason Aguirre (USA) taking out the men’s title and $5,000 prize money. His winning run included a boardslide followed by a tailslide 270 off the high bar into a backside 7, followed by a frontside 9, finishing with a frontside boardslide. “He nailed it on the rails showing a lot of control,” said assistant head judge, Ste’en Webster. “Plus he went big off both jumps, seemingly unaffected by the conditions.”

The high winds certainly presented a challenging event – snow and visibility were ideal but the wind increased during the morning making it more difficult for the riders as the competition progressed. The weather window did, however, allow many riders to step up and throw down some impressive runs.

Alessandro Boyens (GER) introduced a new trick, the Alessandro flip, during his run. The backside flat spin 360 into an inverted front flip which involved him changing his access midway through the spin, earned him second place and $2,500 in prize money.

In the women’s event, Jenny Jones (GBR) won first place with a tailslide on the C Box, followed by a 50:50 180 out on the high bar followed by a backside three, followed by front side three and 50:50 on the final rail. Her execution through the entire run was faultless, also earning her $5,000 in prize money.
