'Light Up Mt Buller' on Opening Weekend

Mt Buller will celebrate the official start of the 2007 winter season with a fun-filled street party called Light Up Mt Buller, which will see the Resort’s Village Square illuminated by a spectacular fireworks and light display.

“Revelling in the recent snow falls, Mt Buller is going all out for opening weekend this year, staging a fireworks spectacular on a level never before seen in the Resort,” said Phil Nunn, CEO, Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board. “For two hours, people will be able to enjoy the electric atmosphere that the street party will create in the Village Square, and then join in the countdown that will see Mt Buller come alive with lights and fireworks.”

The Light Up Mt Buller celebrations will commence at 4:00pm on Saturday 9 June as the sassy Latin sounds of Lounge Trio fill the Village Square, complemented by vibrant entertainment from drummers and fire twirlers.

Barry the Mountain Pygmy-possum, Mt Buller’s environmental mascot, will be on hand to entertain the kids, who will also be able to make the most of free face-painting, balloons and hot chocolate. Free Gluhwein (mulled wine) will also be available for adults, allowing everyone to get into the festive spirit.

“The lead up to the countdown will be exhilarating, accompanied by drums, lights and glow sticks that will provide a beautiful contrast to Buller’s serene and snowy backdrop,” said Nunn. “It will be a lot of fun and should provide a really memorable kick-off to what we envisage will be a great winter.”

Minister for Water, the Environment, and Climate Change, the Hon. John Thwaites will officially welcome everyone to the Resort and open Mt Buller for the snow season, accompanied by Chairman of the ARMB John Dyson.

“The Mansfield-Mt Buller region is really looking forward to the start of the season and is collectively welcoming winter this year,” said Nunn. “While Mt Buller’s public opening will take place on the Saturday of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, Mansfield will actually kick-off the celebrations on the Friday night with its own winter party, complete with giant snowmen and snow. What a great way to start the season!”
